Job Summary:

  • To develop and enhance the existing professional relationships with the clinical cancer services team
  • To lead on service improvement projects within cancer services
  • To develop an integrated way of working with the wider cancer services MDT so that near patient screening is the standard way of working
  • To be an integral member of the Pharmacy Senior Management team
  • Ensure that clinical screening keeps up with best clinical practice
  • Ensure that there is adequate cover of clinical screening
  • Manage and develop both the Senior Cancer Clinical Pharmacist and the Oncology Specialist Pharmacist
  • To conduct and manage audit projects concerned with the provision of clinical pharmacy to the cancer services
  • In conjunction with the Clinical Commissioning and Principal Pharmacist Cancer Services to develop and implement policies/protocols/standards as required to ensure continued development and improvement of the service.
  • To work within broad occupational and professional principles and policies and as lead pharmacist for cancer services to interpret national guidance for local implementation.
  • Support the Clinical Commissioning and Principal Pharmacist Cancer Services with collating and reporting information relating to drugs, including the monitoring and control of high-cost drugs, particularly those that are funded through channels other than the Divisional drugs budget e.g. exceptional funding, Cancer Drugs Fund, NICE funding and those funded through commercial access and risk sharing schemes.
  • Implementation and monitoring of Early Access to Medicines Schemes, Compassionate Use schemes and Free of Charge supplies of medicines for cancer patients ensuring internal governance processes are followed and medicines are supplied in a timely manner.

Communication and relationship skills

  • Excellent communication skills required to provide written and verbal advice and information (including via presentations and reports) on complex pharmaceutical issues to decision makers e.g. (Drugs and Therapeutics Committee (DTC), senior managers and clinicians on prescribing protocols in situations where the advice may be challenged.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for handling complex information, dealing with barriers for understanding and using persuasive skills to secure change in the face of resistance.
  • To be an effective member of the pharmacy team and work closely with relevant professional colleagues from different disciplines and committees across the Trust in order to deliver objectives/job role.
  • To participate regularly in relevant professional networks, professional groups and meetings with local, regional and national colleagues.

 

Analytical and judgement skills 

  • To maintain own advanced clinical pharmacy knowledge in order to be able to fulfil job role.
  • Able to manage complex facts or situations, both clinical and operational, requiring analysis, interpretation or comparison of a range of options.
  • To conduct and manage audit projects concerned with appropriate use of antimicrobials, both within Directorates and specialties plus Trust-wide, reporting results and developing action plans to address areas of weakness.

  • Able to prioritise, plan and organise own workload and a range of complex activities that comprise multiple, often conflicting elements and which require formulation and adjustment in connection with professional colleagues.
  • Able to work accurately and methodically at all times.

 

Key Working Relationships

  • To be a key member of the Trust’s cancer services team and represent the pharmacy department in relevant committees and MDTs

     

  • To represent the Trust, when needed, at the regional cancer network.

     

  • To participate regularly in relevant professional networks, professional groups and meetings with local, regional and national colleagues, bringing ideas for improvement and learning back to the Trust. 
  • To liaise with external bodes such as pharmaceutical companies, national specialist centres etc. to obtain relevant information required to fulfil role.

 

Patient/Client Care

  • Responsible for contributing directly to patient care as part of the clinical pharmacy team by providing highly specialist pharmaceutical advice to prescribers and clinicians at ward level.

     

  • To contribute to the homecare service providing clinical input when required.

 

Budget Responsibility

  • Responsible for monitoring/ guiding prescribing to ensure value for money in the use of medicines. 

  • To support the Chief Pharmacist in delivery of medicines savings and improved efficiency such as CIPs, CQUINs, commissioner and contract targets.

 

Responsibilities for People or Training

  • Responsible as line manager to both the Senior Cancer Clinical Pharmacist and the Oncology Specialist Pharmacist.
  • Responsible for providing highly specialist clinical and professional supervision and training for the rotational pharmacists and other pharmacy staff including senior pharmacists.
  • To be actively involved in delivering training to it's clinical staff, areas identified through reported incidents across the trust.

Other Factors

  • You will be required to work occasional Bank Holidays and participate in the weekend working rota (which includes Saturday and Sunday working).
  • Perform any other reasonable duties commensurate with the grade and as requested by the line manager or Chief Pharmacist.

Education, Qualifications and Training:

  • Vocational Master’s Degree (or equivalent) in pharmacy and 1 year pre-registration training and experience.
  • Current professional registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC). 
  • Postgraduate qualification in clinical pharmacy (at diploma level or above). 

 

Experience:

  • Extensive experience as a senior grade hospital pharmacist, with evidence of management experience and mentoring plus knowledge of clinical supervision and clinical pharmacy standards.
  • Significant clinical pharmacy experience in an oncology or haematology setting, including experience of clinically screening chemotherapy prescriptions.
  • Working knowledge of cancer chemotherapy treatments and supportive care
  • Proven ability to influence and negotiate with relevant senior clinicians, managers and key stakeholders.

 

Knowledge and Skills

  • Able to prioritise, plan and organise a broad range of complex activities, some of which may conflict, across areas of own expertise and responsibility and which impact within pharmacy and across the Trust. 
  • Able to plan and organise training/education sessions, clinical peer reviews and multidisciplinary policy development groups.
  • Able to plan and undertake complex trust-wide audit projects related to areas of responsibility.
  • Proven ability to recognise and take forward opportunities for policy and service developments/change affecting pharmacy and other disciplines.
  • Able to interpret national guidance for local implementation, developing appropriate plans and delivering objectives within agreed timescales.
  • Able to formulate plans and strategies for risk management and adjust them as necessary in the light of changing situations, priorities and demands.
  • Able to use critical evaluation skills to systematically analyse and interpret highly complex medicines information, drug policy and prescribing issues and patient information in own specialist field, and comparing a range of options to provide advice on medicines, dosages etc. in areas where information is lacking and professional opinion differs. 
  • Able to apply advanced theoretical knowledge to work situations and provide an effective clinical service to specialist areas.
  • Able to assess staff performance against standards and identify areas of weakness and implement remedial action in conjunction with the individual concerned.
